Ca dao was originally titled The Golden Triangle and was released on my album, The Mystery of Twilight in 2010. The new version is the result of remixing, altering, and transforming the original into a more powerful sonic statement. It is a collaboration with the poet John Balaban. John provided (with permission!) the field recording from Phoenix Island, Vietnam in 1967.

As per John:

"It is wonderful to hear these voices that I recorded decades ago during the war. These all came from Phoenix Island in the middle of the Mekong. The large bell is the temple bell that was rung day and night and thus became a part of any recording I made there. I love the way Benzola shaped them into a stream running against that frenetic background of (gamelan?) ringing and clanging at great nervous speed. If anyone want to read up on this Vietnamese folk tradition, take a look at my Ca Dao Vietnam: Vietnamese Folk Poetry (Copper Canyon Press, 2003) which has a good introduction to this singing tradition."
